2019 is fast approaching, which means it’s time to start thinking about those New Year’s resolutions. Want to do something that will help your wallet and the world at the same time? Take a look at these 5 money-saving and eco-friendly resolutions to help jumpstart your January goals.
1. Invest in Solar Panels
While it might be a large upfront payment, solar panels will save you plenty of money in the long run. By generating your own power, you could potentially eliminate your electricity bill. Plus, there are several government incentives to help you pay for installation costs. Mother Earth will sure be happy you made the switch!
2. Go Vegetarian
Livestock production contributes to 18% of greenhouse gas emissions and the continual destruction of wild lands. By cutting meat out of your diet, for at least a few days a week if not entirely, you can help offset the damaging effects the meat industry has on the environment. Plus, fresh produce is cheaper than meat and contains plenty of nourishing vitamins. Kale or bust!
3. Take Shorter Showers
Reducing your water usage by just a few short minutes as you get squeaky clean can save you a pretty penny. Not only will you save upwards of $30 a year on your water bill, but you will also save thousands of gallons of water that can be put to better use. What a no brainer!
4. Reuse Food Containers
Instead of using plastic bags and tin foil, wash out glass or plastic containers that once held jelly, hummus, or yogurt. These ready-made tupperware are perfect for carting around packed lunches or holding art supplies in your craft room. Produce less waste and save money on pricey kitchens items that will just end up in a landfill!
5. Bike or Carpool to Work
Cut down on the cost of gas and reduce carbon monoxide emissions by getting to work the green way. If you live close to work, put the pedal to the medal and take a bike to the office for some fresh morning air. But if you need to commute more than a few miles, carpool with coworkers to lighten the load on your wallet and catch up on the gossip!
