The Feds Have Extended Filing and Payment Deadlines — But Has Your State?

In order to offer a little respite to taxpayers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government pushed the federal filing and payment deadlines to July 15. As mass layoffs and business closures continue to loom, many states are following suit. However, some states may still require taxpayers to file or pay on different dates.

Here’s a list of the states that have — or haven’t — matched the federal filing and payment deadlines:

Alabama

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, the due date for individual tax filings and payments corresponds to the new federal deadlines on July 15.

Alaska

There is no state income tax in Alaska.

Arizona

Arizona has moved the deadline for filing and paying state income taxes to July 15.

Arkansas

Arkansas has extended the filing deadline for individual income taxes to July 15.

California

California has postponed the filing and payment deadlines for all individuals and business entities until July 15.

Colorado

Colorado extended the income tax payment deadlines for all Colorado taxpayers until July 15.

Colorado also granted a six-month extension to the tax return deadline. They are now due on or before October 15, 2020.

Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services extended the filing and payment deadline for personal income tax returns to July 15.

Delaware

Delaware moved the deadline for taxpayers to file their 2019 personal income tax returns to July 15.

District of Columbia

The District of Columbia has extended the filing and payment of individual income taxes to July 15.

Florida

There is no state income tax in Florida.

Georgia

Georgia’s new deadline for filing income tax returns is July 15.

Hawaii

The State of Hawaii extended the 2019 income tax filing and payment deadline to July 20.

Idaho

Idaho has extended the deadline to file state income tax returns to June 15.

Illinois

Illinois is delaying the tax filing deadline to July 15.

Indiana

Indiana’s individual tax returns and payments are now due on or before July 15.

Iowa

The Iowa Department of Revenue extended the tax filing and payment deadline to July 31.

Kansas

Kansas has pushed the tax filing deadline to July 15.

Kentucky

Kentucky has extended the 2019 income tax return filing due date to July 15.

Louisiana

Louisiana’s individual income tax deadline is now July 15.

Maine

Maine has extended the income tax return filing deadline to July 15.

Maryland

Maryland’s income tax return deadline was extended to July 15.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts has extended the 2019 state individual income tax filing and payment deadline to July 15.

Michigan

The State of Michigan has declared that its new tax deadline for individual income tax returns this year is July 15.

Minnesota

Minnesota has pushed the deadline to file and pay individual income taxes to July 15.

Mississippi

Mississippi has extended the deadline to file and pay the 2019 individual income tax to May 15.

Missouri

The Missouri Department of Revenue extended the deadline to file income tax returns to July 15.

Montana

Montana has extended the payment and filing deadlines for 2019 individual income taxpayers to July 15.

Nebraska

Nebraskans will have until July 15 to pay state income taxes.

Nevada

There is no state income tax in Nevada.

New Hampshire

There is no state income tax in New Hampshire. The interest and dividends tax, which is a state tax, is due June 15.

New Jersey

New Jersians will be able to file by July 15.

New Mexico

In New Mexico, all tax filing and payment is postponed to July 15.

New York

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended the tax filing deadline to July 15.

North Carolina

North Carolina has extended the tax filing deadline to July 15.

North Dakota

North Dakotans will have until July 15 to file and pay their income tax.

Ohio

Ohio has extended the deadline to file and pay the state income tax to July 15.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma has extended the deadline for taxpayers to file their 2019 personal income tax returns to July 15.

Oregon

Oregon has extended the deadline for tax filing and payment to July 15.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has extended the deadline for taxpayers to file their income tax returns to July 15.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island has postponed the deadline for tax filings and payments to July 15.

South Carolina

South Carolina has extended the deadline for taxpayers to file their 2019 personal income tax returns to July 15.

South Dakota

There is no state income tax in South Dakota.

Tennessee

Tennessee has extended the due date for filing and paying franchise and excise tax to July 15.

Texas

There is no state income tax in Texas.

Utah

By Utah law, individuals are bound to the same deadlines to file and pay taxes as the IRS. These deadlines have extended to July 15 in correspondence with the Federal deadlines.

Vermont

Vermont has extended the deadline for filing personal income taxes to July 15.

Virginia

In Virginia, individual income tax filings are due May 1. Late payment penalties will not be charged if payments are made by June 1.

Washington

There is no state income tax in Washington.

West Virginia

West Virginia has extended the deadline to file 2019 annual income tax returns to July 15.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin extended the due date for filing 2019 income taxes to July 15.

Wyoming

There is no state income tax in Wyoming.
